Rock in Rio 2001
We are 166 million inhabitants in Brazil. If each one of us stops for 3 minutes to think about what we can do to better the world, it will be a great start.

This is the mobilization we will propose. On January 12, 2001, at 7 p.m., the Symphonic Orchestra opened the event at the City of Rock, with John Lennon's song "Imagine".

Rock in Rio For a better world

The project For a Better World was the key prop for the festival's third edition and allocated 5% of the net revenue from ticket sales, sponsorship, product licensing, etc., for the Viva Rio Organization (70%) and other vocational education projects (30%) led by serious social organisms like UNESCO, which will promote a contest to select one educational project to be supported.

The overall estimate is to collect R$ 12 million, apart from other donation systems for the project which were developed, via Internet, for instance. If reached, that amount could contribute to the training of 11,500 youngsters.

These youngsters, between 17 and 29, belong to a risky social group. They have passed the age of compulsory education but still haven't defined their professional future. Today, with the fundamental education program implemented by the federal administration, 95% of the Brazilian children between 7 and 14 go to school, but young adults older than 17 belong to a generation previous to the introduction of the project. According to statistics, each school year raises the revenue by 17%. High school graduation takes this figure up to 54%.
